Fun career-finding app–Compass Lite

21 Feb

I just ran across this Compass Lite app yesterday and thought it was kind of fun– much more fun than the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator. A local company called Woofound is piloting software at UMBC and Towson U that matches personalities with possible careers. They’ve released a “Lite” version that you can access on Facebook: try this link.

It asks you to basically look at a series of images that correspond to different environments, work styles, and interests, and you just click “me” or “not me.” I tried it … and it gave me these possible career fields: art history, architecture, philosophy, professor of forestry (as well as several other kinds of professor, but I thought this was the most interesting one), social science researcher …. interestingly, the word “literature” never appeared! What could this mean?? Have I been living a lie? Should I seek a truer calling? (OK, OK, I won’t get hysterical. A lot of the careers they suggested for me actually sounded quite appealing!) Anyway, it was fun. If you try it, post a reply with the fields that came up for you! –JLC

This is the best career test ever! It says that I should be a Visionary/Inventor. Ha! It recommended that I be a Judge (I was a pre-law major as an undergrad), Cultural Studies Professor (my research is in cultural studies), News Anchor, Communication Specialist, and Advertising Executive (I did this before going to grad school). Anyway, I like the idea of being a visionary/inventor. I think I should get that added to my official title here 🙂

Oh yeah– I forgot, I also got “Cultural Studies Professor” recommended to me, which is, I guess, mostly what I am! And in the spirit of full disclosure, I came out to be an “Analyst/Inventor.” Pretty accurate, I would say.

This is really interesting! I wasn’t surprised by the “personality” they assigned me; Naturalist/Visionary. But the career choices were not at all what I would have guessed, like Judge, Chirocracter, Purchasing Manager, or Air Traffic Controller. Forestry Professor and Travel Agent did come up too. I like the idea of being a Naturalist/Visionary but not in love with all the desk-jobs they suggested!
